For anyone who has been around their parents for a while knows that they have catch phrases that will ring in your ears for the rest of your days. I think they do it on purpose for that very reason. Those phrases that you feel coming before they even say them and once they say them you often can finish them. Since I’m an unmarried women, there is one that my mom always says that I constantly remind myself of. “Make him climb for you.” Yup, that’s it. Just those five words.
What does this mean? Well, I’ve found that in past relationships I’ve gone above and beyond making sure I’m the super girlfriend (super loyal, super thoughtful, and super available) and more often than not, failed to get the same in return. It’s great to be “super”, but your suitor should be doing the same, if not more, to win your heart. He should be climbing for you. Whenever I think of those words now, it slows me down. Forces me to take stock of the situation at hand and determine if a prospect is really in it for me. Usually it ends up being a “NEXT!!” kind of situation.
Recently, I have thought about these words, but from another angle. I think about the One who I know loves me just as I am. He loves me when I’m happy and even when my attitude sucks. He loves me for the very skin I’m in, whether I’m on top of my fitness game or if I’ve gained weight. Regardless of my past or present state, He loves me for me. Then I think about the climb. How Jesus, by choice, did exactly what needed to be done to save the entire world from death, hell, and the grave. The ultimate declaration of love. He wasn’t captured and forced onto a cross. He chose to do it. He climbed for me.
So now when my mother says those words I’m reminded that I have the affections of the greatest love that I will ever know. Christ made the greatest grand gesture in history and will forever hold that title. It doesn’t compare to the most orchestrated and planned marriage proposal. Or even this guy lol.
He laid down His very life. I doubt that will ever be topped.
